Six weddings, written up in full

Six couples wrote the accounts below and each is printed whole, alongside the service it concerns and the day it was written. Together they cover the ceremony, the reception, the full plan, the flowers, the catering and the venue search.

The venue would not confirm my date until the deposit cleared and nobody pretended that was unusual. I was told what it meant for the timeline before I paid anything, shown the written quote beside the figure on this website, and given the two dates that were genuinely still open. The wedding ran to the order of service I had rehearsed on the Thursday. That is the whole reason I handed the year to one planner instead of holding it myself.

In the couples’ own words

I came in on a Saturday morning without a date fixed and was talked through the ceremony properly before deciding anything — what the figure covered, what it did not, what would change if I moved to a Friday. Nothing was upsold and nothing appeared on the invoice that I had not agreed to. I have sat through a great many hurried consultations in this city and this one was not hurried.

What the website said about reception management is what I got. One planner on the floor from the supplier arrivals to the last van leaving, described in full sentences rather than in three words on a brochure. I asked who would hold the running order if she were ill and the answer came straight back instead of somebody disappearing to check twice. The price printed beside the description is the price I paid.

I wrote to ask about venues for a hundred and ten people and had a written answer the same afternoon, inside opening hours, with the amount spelled out and with what it did and did not cover. Nothing was held until I confirmed in writing, and that was said plainly rather than buried three paragraphs down. The shortlist had four rooms on it and every one of them was actually free on my date.

Catering coordination really is priced from the guest count, which the website says and which turned out to be true rather than a way of avoiding a number. I was quoted in writing after the tasting, the figure moved once when I added eight people, and that change was explained before it appeared. Nobody tried to steer me toward the caterer with the best commission, because there is no commission.

I ask tedious questions about flowers and I got real answers here: which grower, when the stems would land, what would be out of season by my date. The arrangements came at the size I had drawn, the figure was quoted before I agreed to anything, and when I asked for the top table to be redone lower so people could see each other, that simply happened, without a surcharge appearing afterwards.
