Six services, each with its published scope

A price with no scope beside it is not information. Each service below states what it covers, what it does not, and who it suits, so the choice can be made before the first conversation rather than during it.

  • Diagnostic scan and road test

    $119

Up to ninety minutes in the bay. Stored and pending fault codes read from every module, live sensor data logged on a road test, battery and charging output measured, and the tires, lights and fluid levels checked. Ends with the readings written down and the options set out. Parts and repair labour are quoted separately.

Suits A car behaving differently from last month, and anyone who has been quoted for a part without being told which reading called for it.

  • Oil and filter service

    $79

Engine oil drained and replaced to the grade the manufacturer specifies, a new oil filter fitted, the sump plug washer renewed and the level set on a cold engine. The air and cabin filters are inspected and reported on. Covers one vehicle; a second on the same visit is priced separately.

Suits A car that runs but has not been under the ramp in a year, and any owner whose service schedule has slipped.

  • Brake inspection and report

    $95

All four wheels off, pad and disc thickness measured and recorded, calipers and slide pins checked for free movement, flexible hoses inspected along their length, and the fluid tested for moisture content. Ends with a written scope for whatever the measurements call for. Replacement parts are quoted separately.

Suits A pedal that has gone long or soft, a noise that arrives with the brakes, or a car due its first inspection after a long winter.

  • Timing belt replacement

    from $640

Supply and fit of a timing belt matched to the engine, with the tensioner and idler pulleys renewed at the same time, the water pump inspected and quoted if it is driven by the belt, and the engine timing checked against the manufacturer's marks before the car is handed back. The price starts from the simplest four-cylinder fitment.

Suits A car approaching the mileage or the age in its schedule, whichever falls first, and anyone who has bought a car with no belt history.

  • Repair-versus-replace assessment

    no charge

An inspection of the vehicle and its service history, a written list of the work it needs now and the work it will need within a year, and a comparison of that figure against what the car is worth. No charge, and no obligation. Repairs are quoted separately if the car is kept.

Suits A car facing a bill close to its value, a failed test with a long list, and anyone weighing a large repair against changing the car.

  • Pre-purchase inspection

    $189

A used car inspected before money changes hands: bodywork and panel gaps checked for past accident repair, the engine and transmission assessed cold and warm, brakes and suspension measured, fault codes read, and a road test carried out. Ends with a written report of what was found. No opinion is given on the asking price.

Suits A private sale with no history, a car bought at distance, and anyone who wants a second look before a deposit is paid.

What happens in each of the three stages

  1. 01

    Measurement

Readings first: stored fault codes, live sensor data on a road test, pad and disc thickness, and the condition of the fluids and the tires. The numbers are written down and shown.

  2. 02

    Scope and figure

The readings become a written scope with a figure against it. Any part that has to be ordered is named, and the reason the work is needed is stated in a sentence that does not require a technician to read.

  3. 03

    Work and handover

The agreed scope is carried out and the same readings are taken again afterwards, so the effect of the work is a measurement rather than an assurance. Anything found on the way is quoted, never assumed.

When a replacement is the honest answer

Benchmark Motor Works declines repairs that cost more than the remaining life of the car is worth, and says so at the inspection rather than after the invoice. A rotten sill on a tired shell, an automatic gearbox worth more than the car around it, and corrosion through a structural member are all replacement conversations, not repair conversations.

Start with a diagnostic scan

Readings first, written down and shown, with the options set out before anything is fitted.

Service notes, occasionally

An email when a service interval is worth a reminder or a recall affects a common model. No fixed schedule, and one link in every message removes an address from the list.
