Clip or scissor

Full groom

A bath in a shampoo chosen for the coat comes first, then a full dry, and only then a clip or a scissor shape worked to what the coat actually does rather than to a photograph. Feet, face, ears and nails are all finished before the dog comes off the table.

Worth knowing: A coat matted down to the skin is taken short rather than combed out for two hours, and that is agreed with you before it starts rather than explained afterwards.

About 2 hours Best for a coat that keeps growing and needs a full shape every six to ten weeks.

Bath led

Bath and tidy

A bath, a full dry and a brush right through, then a tidy of the feet, the face and the rear rather than a shape over the whole body. Nothing comes off the length, so a coat being grown out keeps what it has already put on.

What the appointment includes

  • Feet, face and rear tidied
  • Nails checked and taken back if needed

Worth knowing: No body clip or scissor shape is included here — that is the full groom at $78.

About 60 minutes Best for a coat kept brushed at home that needs washing and tidying between full grooms.

Undercoat out

Price: $38

De-shed treatment

A bath in a shampoo that lifts and opens a double coat, a high-velocity dry that drives the loose undercoat out of it, and then a rake and a comb worked through until what is coming out is only coat that was already dead.

What the appointment includes

  • A bath worked to open the undercoat
  • A high-velocity dry through to the skin
  • Raked and combed until nothing loose is left

Worth knowing: A double coat is never shaved to stop it shedding: it does not come back the same, and this is the treatment that exists instead.

About 45 minutes Best for a husky, a shepherd or any double coat that drops its undercoat twice a year.

Shears, drawn. A straight blade and a curved blade leave a different line on the same coat, which is why more than one pair sits within reach of the table.

The long appointment

Hand strip

A wire coat plucked out by hand instead of cut, so the harsh topcoat and the colour in it grow back the way the breed carries them. It is slower than a clip and it is worked to a schedule rather than to whenever the coat happens to look long.

What the appointment includes

  • The dead topcoat plucked out by hand
  • The undercoat carded down underneath it
  • Furnishings tidied by hand, not clipped
  • The next strip dated before you leave

Worth knowing: A wire coat that has been clipped for years may not strip cleanly the first time. That is said at the first appointment, not discovered halfway through it.

About 2 hours 30 minutes Best for a terrier, a schnauzer or any wire coat that has gone soft and pale under a clipper.

Between grooms

Nail trim and ear clean

Nails taken back to just short of the quick on all four feet, dewclaws included, and ears wiped out and looked into. It is added to the end of a groom, or booked on its own in the weeks between two of them.

What the appointment includes

  • All four feet and any dewclaws
  • Ears wiped out and checked
  • Anything that looks wrong pointed out to you

Worth knowing: It is a trim and a look, not treatment — nothing is put into an ear here, and anything that needs a veterinary surgeon is named as such.

About 15 minutes Best for nails that have started to touch the floor before a full groom is due.

First visit

Puppy first visit

A short appointment for a puppy under six months that is mostly about the room rather than about the coat. The table, the water, the dryer on its lowest setting and a pair of clippers running are met one at a time, at whatever pace the puppy sets, with you in the room for the whole of it.

What the appointment includes

  • You stay in the room throughout
  • Each tool met before it is used
  • Whatever the puppy will take, and no more

Worth knowing: A puppy that has had enough is stopped and finished another day, and the price does not change for it.

About 30 minutes Best for a first visit booked before ten or twelve weeks of coat has had time to build up.

A folded towel, drawn. It comes out warm and goes on before the dryer, which is where most of the water actually leaves a coat.

Before the table

How getting in touch works

  1. Describe the coat

    A message says what the breed or the mix is, how the coat is kept now, roughly when it was last groomed and which service looks closest. A photograph is welcome and never required.

  2. Read the reply

    A groomer answers by email or telephone during opening hours, names the service that fits, states the price and says how long the appointment needs.

  3. Agree a time

    The time is fixed in that reply, or through the Book action if a slot is being chosen directly. Nothing earlier in the sequence holds an appointment.

When a service is not the right one

A groomer with the coat in front of them will say when a chosen service is the wrong fit and name the one that is, before starting. That happens at the table and it happens in the reply to a message. Nothing gets started on a service that will not work, and nothing gets charged for a service that was not carried out.

Bramble & Paw Pet Grooming does not carry out veterinary treatment, does not sedate, and does not shave a double coat to stop it shedding. Anything that belongs with a veterinary surgeon is named as such and the appointment stops there.
