The visitor book

Visitors to the studio, in their own words

Each note below names the service it refers to and the day it was written, so it can be read against the thing it describes.

The reviews

Studio detail: an engraved coil tattoo machine on a plain white ground.

Design consultation

No. 01

“The consultation was the whole difference. I was asked where it would sit when my arm was down, which nobody had asked before, and the thumbnail was drawn there at the counter instead of emailed to me a week later. The price and the number of sittings were both written down before I left, and neither of them moved.”

Studio detail: a rollomatic liner machine with its frame and springs in full view.

Half-day sitting

No. 02

“The stencil went on three times before anybody was happy with it. That took an hour and it was the right hour to spend, because the shape follows my shoulder now instead of sitting across it. The break in the middle of the block was in the diary from the start rather than asked for halfway through.”

Studio detail: a tattooing implement from Vanuatu, from a museum collection.

Andre B.

Flash piece

No. 03

“Price on the sheet was the price I paid. The touch-up was booked before I left, six weeks out, and nothing appeared at the counter that had not already been said at the chair. The design was one of theirs and it went on at the size it was drawn for, which is apparently the whole reason it could be priced in advance.”

Studio detail: a carved uhi chisel laid flat on a white ground.

Full-day sitting

No. 04

“I booked the whole day because the piece would otherwise have been three half-days and three stencils. It was laid out in sections at the start and each one was finished before the next was started, so when the day ended at close it stopped on a finished edge rather than in the middle of one. Two breaks and food were in the plan, not squeezed in.”

Studio detail: a macro photograph of a needle laying a black line.

Theo R.

Touch-up sitting

No. 05

“Two small places had lifted while it healed and they were put back in half an hour. I had been told at the original sitting that this happens and that the first touch-up was already covered, which is exactly what turned out to be true six weeks later. The aftercare was gone over a second time without me having to ask for it.”

Studio detail: a painted tattooist's case standing open, with a machine and ink bottles inside.

Cover and rework

No. 06

“I brought in something from fifteen years ago expecting to be sold a cover-up. Instead it was looked at in daylight and I was told plainly that one part of it wanted lightening somewhere else first, and that the rest read better reworked than buried. The quote followed that answer rather than the other way round.”
