Tutoring questions, answered

Eight questions families and adult learners ask most often, grouped into three categories and answered in full. Every answer states the position in its first sentence.

Service

Choosing a service, prices, what to bring and tutors

01 How should a family choose a service?

Start with the six service descriptions on the Services page and the price beside each one. Each description says which learners it suits and what it does not include, so most families can rule out four of the six in a few minutes. Where two still look equally suitable, send the contact form naming both with a sentence about the learner, and Quillfield replies with which one fits and why. A family that is still unsure can book the starting assessment, which exists for exactly that question.

02 Are the displayed prices final?

Yes. Each published price applies to the session length printed beside it: $85 for sixty minutes of maths, $90 for sixty minutes of science, $75 for fifty minutes of reading and writing, $70 for forty-five minutes of study skills, $120 for the ninety-minute starting assessment and $640 for the eight-session exam block. There are no registration fees and no monthly contracts, and online lessons cost the same as lessons in the study room.

03 What should a learner bring to a first lesson?

Bring the course textbook or syllabus, the last two or three pieces of marked work and any upcoming test dates. For reading and writing, a recent essay or the book currently being read is the most useful starting point. Online learners need a laptop or tablet with a camera and a quiet table, because a phone screen is too small for a shared whiteboard. Report cards and other school documents are shared through the process described in Quillfield’s reply, not through an ordinary website message.

04 Can a family request a particular tutor?

Yes. Name the tutor in the contact form message, and Quillfield confirms whether that tutor teaches the course and has a suitable weekly time. The Staff page lists each tutor with the services they concentrate on. If another tutor is a better fit for the learner’s course or timetable, Quillfield says so and explains why before anything is agreed.

Still not sure

If the four answers above have not settled it, the contact form is quicker than reading further. Name the two services under consideration and the learner’s grade, and Quillfield will say which one fits.

Contact

What this website does and does not do

05 Does the website book a lesson?

No. This website sends a contact request or directs the visitor to the configured Book destination; it does not confirm a lesson and it holds no timetable. Nothing shown here is live availability. A request becomes a weekly lesson only once Quillfield has replied and the tutor, the time and the service are agreed in writing.

06 How are missed lessons and cancellations handled?

A lesson can be moved or cancelled without charge with at least twenty-four hours’ notice, by replying to the confirmation email or using the contact form. A lesson cancelled with less notice is charged in full, except for illness or a school closure, which are never charged. Quillfield confirms every change in writing, and a change is not in effect until that confirmation arrives.

Practical

Results, and where lessons happen

07 Does Quillfield promise a grade or test score?

No. Grades and test scores depend on the learner’s own work, the school, the test and many things no tutor controls, so Quillfield does not promise a grade, a score, an improvement of a set size or a college place. What it does describe is what will be practised, how often and at what price, and each family receives a written progress review every term that says honestly how that practice is going.

08 Are lessons held in person or online?

Both. In-person lessons run in Quillfield’s study room in Columbus, and online lessons run on a shared video whiteboard with the same tutors, the same session lengths and the same prices. Many learners mix the two, meeting in person during term and online over school breaks. The Privacy page explains what the contact and subscribe forms collect and how that information is kept.
