05 · About
A tutoring practice built around one written plan
Quillfield Tutoring gives one-to-one lessons in maths, science, reading and writing, study skills and exam preparation to learners in and around Columbus. The way it works is set out below, in the order a family meets it.
02 · Approach
How Quillfield works
Quillfield Tutoring was started in 2019 by Rebecca Hollins after eleven years of teaching high-school mathematics, and after seeing the same pattern every spring: learners who had fallen behind in October, and nobody who had noticed until March. The practice is built around catching that earlier, with one tutor, one learner and one written plan.
Every learner starts from a plan rather than an open run of lessons. The plan names the subject, the weekly pattern and the first four topics, and it is reviewed in writing in October, December and June so that a family can see what has changed rather than simply being told that things are going well. Tutors work from the learner’s own course, syllabus and marked work, not from a separate curriculum.
Lessons are one-to-one only, in a Columbus study room or online, and every service is published with its session length and its price. Nothing is sold as a monthly contract, and a family can stop after any lesson.
03 · Principles
Three operating principles
Each one is a rule Quillfield can be held to, not a statement of intent.
01
The learner does the work
A tutor explains, asks questions and checks, but the learner writes the answer. Quillfield does not complete graded homework, take-home tests or essays for anyone, in any subject, for any fee.
02
Progress in writing
A family should be able to read what a lesson covered without having to ask. Every session ends with a short written note, and every plan is reviewed in writing three times a year.
03
No promised grade
Quillfield does not promise a grade, a test score or a college place. It describes what will be practised, how often and at what price, and reports honestly on how that practice is going.
04 · Process
Four steps, first message to weekly lesson
The same four for every service on the Services page, whatever the subject.
01
The enquiry
A parent, guardian or adult learner sends the contact form or writes by email, naming the subject and the learner’s grade.
02
The reply
Quillfield replies during opening hours with a suitable tutor, the times that tutor has open and the price.
03
The plan
A starting assessment or a first lesson sets out the subject, the weekly pattern and the first topics in writing.
04
Lessons and notes
Lessons run weekly, each followed by a short note, with a written review of the plan every term.
05 · Place and limits
The study room, and what it cannot take
One stated limitation
Quillfield Tutoring is a small practice with four tutors, and most lessons run on weekday afternoons and evenings after school. From September to November, and again in the eight weeks before AP exams, the after-school hours fill first, and a new learner may be offered a later evening time, a Saturday morning or a place on a short waiting list rather than the time a family would prefer. Quillfield says so in its first reply rather than accepting a learner it cannot see every week. A family with a test inside three weeks is better served by asking first than by assuming a preparation block can start at once.
06 · Contact
Ask whether a tutor has room
An enquiry gets a straight answer about tutor availability and lesson times before anything else is discussed.
