An engagement is agreed before it starts. The question is written down, the scope that answers it is set out in plain terms, and the cost of that scope is confirmed at that point rather than after the work. Where a question falls outside what Marchmont Vale Law does, the practice says so in the first conversation.
Photographs of the rooms and materials the work is done in. None of them shows a client, a file or a document belonging to one.

Principal attorney
Takes the first conversation on every file and stays with it afterwards. The work is to define the question, name the documents that bear on it and set out the scope and the fee before anything is drafted. No outcome is predicted, and public enquiries are kept free of case detail.
Estate and property attorney
Carries the will and estate documents and the residential property closings, the two engagements where a date set by someone else governs the work. Each draft separates what has been confirmed from what is still assumed, and every deadline sits on one page.
