Questions about working with the firm, answered

Eight questions the firm is asked most often, grouped into three categories and answered in full. Every answer states the position in its first sentence. The answers describe how the firm works; they are general information, not legal advice about any particular matter.

Service

Choosing, scope, fees and who does the work

01 How should a visitor choose a service?

Start with the six service descriptions on the Services page and the fee beside each one. Every description states what the service covers and what it does not, so most visitors can rule out four of the six in a couple of minutes. Where two options still look equally suitable, the initial consultation is the usual starting point, and its fee is credited against the larger service if one follows within thirty days.

02 Are the published fees final?

Published fees apply to the stated scope and to nothing else. Where a fee is shown as a figure, that figure holds for the work described beside it. Where it is shown as a “from” fee, the scope varies with the length of the documents involved, so a written quote is confirmed in the engagement letter before any work begins. Court costs and state filing fees are paid to the court or the state and are listed separately.

03 What should a first-time visitor prepare?

Bring only the documents that bear directly on the question: the lease and any notices for a housing matter, the draft contract for a review, or the agreement or offer letter for an employment question. Write down any date that appears on them. Confidential documents, identification numbers and account details are exchanged through the secure process the firm describes in its reply, never through an ordinary website message.

04 Can a visitor ask for a particular attorney?

Yes. Use the contact form to name the attorney or the kind of matter, and the firm confirms who is suitable and available. The Staff page lists each person with the services they handle. If the requested attorney is not the right fit, or has a conflict, the firm says so and explains who is, before anything is signed.

Still not sure

If the four answers above have not settled it, the contact form is quicker than reading further. Name the two services under consideration and the firm will say which scope fits the question.

Contact

What this website does and does not do

05 Does sending the form make the firm a visitor’s lawyer?

No. No attorney-client relationship is formed by this website, by sending the contact form or by an email reply to it. A relationship begins only when the conflict check is clear and both sides have signed an engagement letter. Nothing on this website is legal advice about a particular matter. The website does not complete a booking either: a meeting exists only once the firm has replied and a time is agreed in writing.

06 How are changes or cancellations handled?

Send the contact form, or write to the firm by email, naming the matter and the change wanted. Every change is confirmed in writing, and a change is not in effect until that confirmation arrives. There is no charge for moving a meeting at least one working day ahead, or for ending work that has not started. Where work has begun, the signed engagement letter sets the amount owed.

Practical

Suitability and privacy

07 Does the firm take every kind of matter?

No. Ashcombe Street Law does not handle criminal defense, personal injury, immigration, divorce or custody litigation, or probate administration. It also declines any matter where the conflict check finds an existing client on the other side. Where the firm cannot help, it says so in the first reply and, where it can, suggests what kind of lawyer to look for instead.

08 Where can privacy information be found?

The Privacy page explains what the contact and subscribe forms collect, why each field is collected, who receives it, how long it is kept and how to ask for it to be removed. It also states the limitation that matters most: an ordinary website message is not a secure channel, so confidential documents belong in the secure process the firm describes instead.
