The soup was gone by two and nobody pretended otherwise. I was told at the counter before I ordered, offered the lunch plate instead, and shown the loaf that had come out of the oven that morning. When I walked back down Lantern Row the following Saturday the soup was there and the figure on the board was the figure I paid. That is the whole reason I keep coming back to this one room instead of eating somewhere closer to my own street.
I came in at nine on a Saturday without booking anything and was at the counter within a minute. The breakfast was described to me properly before I decided — what was on it that week, what had changed since the board was written that morning. Nothing was upsold and nothing arrived that I had not agreed to. I have eaten a great many hurried breakfasts in this city and this one was not hurried.
What the website said about the lunch plate was what arrived. One plate, listed that morning, described in a full sentence rather than in three words on a chalkboard. I asked what was in the dressing and the answer came back straight away instead of somebody disappearing to check twice. The price printed beside the description was the price on the receipt, and no service charge was added at the table.
I wrote to ask about the long table for eleven people and had a written answer the same afternoon, inside opening hours, with the amount spelled out and with what it did and did not cover. Nothing was held until I confirmed in writing, and that was said plainly rather than buried three paragraphs down. The table itself sits at the back and is far quieter than I expected for a room this small.
The pastry counter really is at its widest first thing, which the website says and which turns out to be true. By half past two there were three things left and the person behind the counter told me what had gone rather than steering me toward whatever remained. I asked about a larger order for an office and was quoted in writing that evening. No deposit was asked for over the counter.
I drink filter coffee and I ask tedious questions about it. I got real answers here: which roaster, when it landed, what it had been doing since. The cup came at the right temperature, the figure was on the board before I ordered, and when I asked for the second one to be made differently that simply happened, without a lecture about it. A short list, done properly.
It is published in the open, where anyone can copy it, so it is left short of its final polish and audit pass. The design chosen is fully audited and polished before it goes live.
