Six services, each with its price

Every service below states what is included and what it costs. A price marked “from” is the lowest price for the stated scope; a custom price is quoted in writing before anything is set aside. Nothing on this page holds a session.

The six services in full

A large-diaphragm condenser microphone in a shock mount with a pop filter, in front of a dark desk with a laptop and a lit controller.

01

Tracking session

$620 per day

Eight hours in the main room with one engineer, the house microphones, preamps and console, recorded to multitrack. Setup and sound checks come out of the eight hours, not on top of them, and the session files are handed over on the day in a format any recording program opens. Session players and instrument hire are arranged separately. Send the preferred date through the contact form before anything else.

Best for

Best for a solo artist or a small group recording parts one at a time over a single day.

Booked as whole days, Tuesday to Saturday.

A cream-panelled studio wall with a gear-shaped clock under a purple-lit ceiling, above two large twin-woofer monitors.

02

Vocal overdub

$240 per block

Four hours in the vocal booth with an engineer and one microphone chain chosen for the voice before the first take. The block covers lead and backing vocals over an existing recording, brought on a drive or sent ahead, and the comped takes are delivered the same evening. It is sized for one singer; a second voice is a second block.

Best for

Best for a singer who has the instrumental finished and needs the vocal recorded properly.

Blocks start at 10:00 AM, 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM.

Two wood-framed equipment racks holding power amplifiers, compressors and a red patch bay with cables plugged in.

03

Mastering pass

$150 per song

One finished stereo mix mastered for streaming and for disc, with loudness, balance and the gaps between songs set by ear on the room’s monitors. One round of revisions is included and the final files are delivered as WAV. The mix is sent ahead and nobody needs to attend, though anyone who wants to listen in may.

Best for

Best for a single or an album whose mixes are finished and only need the last stage.

Files are returned within five working days of receipt.

A vintage mixing console in a red-walled room, with colourful patch cables, three monitors on the meter bridge and a window behind.

04

Attended mix

From $380 per song

A song mixed on the console with the artist in the room to hear every change as it is made. The mix is printed with an instrumental and a vocal-up version beside it. The fee starts at three hundred and eighty dollars for up to twenty-four tracks and rises with the track count; the figure is confirmed in writing once the session files have been seen.

Best for

Best for an artist who wants to be present for the decisions rather than receive a mix by email.

Usually one song a day, two if the arrangement is small.

Two condenser microphone grilles side by side, their switches set to pad and low-cut positions marked in decibels and hertz.

05

Live-room day

From $900 per day

The live room for a full band recording together, with two engineers, the house drum kit, two amplifiers and the upright piano. The fee starts at nine hundred dollars for up to five players and rises with the headcount and the number of microphones; the figure is confirmed in writing before the date is held.

Best for

Best for a band that plays best in one room at the same time.

One live-room day a week, usually a Friday or Saturday.

An angled desk of blue outboard units beside a black mesh chair with a wooden armrest, above a wooden floor.

06

Analogue transfer

Custom quoted in writing

Quarter-inch, half-inch and two-inch tape, cassette and DAT transferred to digital files on calibrated machines. The price depends on the format, the number of reels and the condition of the tape, and a written quotation follows a look at the boxes. Nothing on this website holds a machine or a date; the enquiry opens a conversation by email or telephone.

Best for

Best for a family archive, a band’s old masters, or a reel with no label and no way to play it.

One archive at a time. Enquiries are answered during opening hours.

07Contact

How contact works, in three steps

  1. A message arrives

The contact form sends the name, email address, optional telephone number, the service named and the message. Nothing else is collected and nothing is charged.

  2. The studio replies

Silas Wren answers by email or telephone during opening hours, confirms the scope and states the price that applies. A “from” or custom price becomes an exact figure at this point.

  3. A session is agreed

Only after that reply is anything held. Book a session opens the same enquiry form as every other contact action on this website, so a date is asked for here and confirmed by the studio separately; the website never states that a day is free until that confirmation has come back.

08Suitability

When two services look equally right

The descriptions above are written so a visitor can choose without asking. When two still look equally suitable, the shorter path is to send one message naming both: the studio answers with the one that fits the recording, the number of players and how much is already finished. Access needs and equipment questions are answered the same way, in writing, well before the date.

Suitability depends on a customer's own needs, and the studio does not claim a service suits everyone. The questions page covers the eight asked most often.

Contact

Name a service and send one message

The reply confirms the exact price for the scope described above. A message is an enquiry and does not hold a session.

Or write to [email protected] and the studio replies during opening hours.
